My biological father gave me a car for my 17th birthday, then told my stepdad, "now he knows who his real father is." — I wanted to humiliate him back, but then I came up with a lesson the whole family would remember.

And he did not say anything at all.

He got his keyring out of his jacket on the back of the door and worked the ring open with his thumbnail, which took him a while because it is a cheap one and his hands are not what they were.

And he slid them off and put them in my hand and closed my fingers over them, which I do not think he did on purpose and which I have not been able to stop thinking about since.

And then he said the only thing he has ever said to me about any of it.

"Took you long enough."

And he was not talking about the keys.

He had been carrying them for thirteen years waiting for me to want them — which meant waiting for me to understand what they were — and he was never going to explain it, and he was never going to hand them over unasked, and he would have carried them for another thirteen.

They are on my ring now
